Rotarians
Witness Chaos In Haiti --
By Ryan Hyland - RI News -- 20 January 2010 |
As
president of the Rotary Club of Houston, it had
been Michelle Bohreer's dream to travel to Haiti
and conduct a service project to improve the lives
of children there.
On 12 January, 45 minutes
into a weeklong trip to Port-au-Prince to do just
that, the dream quickly spiraled into a nightmare.
Bohreer and
a team of five Rotarians from Houston were heading
into Haiti’s capital city to implement a water
project for an orphanage when a powerful earthquake
rocked the area, causing widespread devastation.

Former child-slaves gather around
a motorbike provided by two Rotary clubs, West
Chester Downtown “Fridays”
and Norwich-St. Edmunds (England), at Bal Vikas
Ashram in India. |
“Rajneesh,”
who conducts raids and child-slave rescues, as well
as keeps operations running smoothly at Bal Vikas
Ashram child-slave rehab center, took the first
spin on a motorbike provided by Rotarians this month.
He traveled to the area of Bhadohi to check on the
health of Asmat, a boy who was a slave in the carpet
industry, and the financial situation of his family.
After Asmat was rescued, he was treated at BVA and
returned to his home, but is currently suffering
from cardiac problems.

The dinner and orientation for the 2010-2011 Rotary

from Temple University sophomore music major, Dan
Matarazzo, whom The Philadelphia Daily News recently
referred to as “a teddy bear with a glorious
voice.” Accompanied by Philadelphia teacher

Rotary Addresses Root Causes of Conflict and War
>
|
HOW
IS ROTARY INTERNATIONAL AND ITS FOUNDATION
PERCEIVED OUTSIDE OF ROTARY?
Rotary
International believes that the deeper
issues related to the root causes of conflict
- such as political violence, social injustice,
poverty, hunger, illiteracy, and environmental
degradation - all point to the need for
more sustainable forms of peace.

The
Purple Pinky Story
When young children in the four countries*
still under the threat of the wild polio virus receive
the polio vaccine, their pinky fingers are marked
with purple dye to indicate their vaccination. When
you make a donation of at least $1.00 to Rotary’s
Polio Plus campaign, we paint the tip of your pinky
finger purple to remind you that you are protecting
one child against polio, and that you are helping
to eradicate polio worldwide. THANK YOU!

Celebrating
The Rotary Foundation
(Honesdale,
December 1, 2009)…When it comes to strength
in numbers, the Rotary Foundation packs quite a
punch. On Friday November 20th in Philadelphia,
more than 100 Rotarians gathered to celebrate the
work of the Foundation, a group that leverages the
hourly and monetary contributions of more than 1.2
million Rotarians worldwide into programs that save
ten times as many lives.
Former Rotary
International President Wilf Wilkinson talked about
the importance of the Foundation’s programs,
including its Polio Plus Campaign and its Annual
Fund. The Fund supports humanitarian, educational
and cultural projects—disaster recovery, sustainable
agriculture, health and hunger projects, ambassadorial
scholarships, group study exchanges and more.
