Thanks to
Charlie Vickery, Oxford
Rotary Club President,
for this article just published in The
Economist, featuring Rotary and polio
eradication. Yes, they do term Rotary
a "businessmen's" club, which
it was in 1985 when Rotary announced its
plans to eradicate polio by vaccinating
every child under five. |

Your
Gently-worn Jewelry and Dresses for a Good Cause!
|
In fact, they’re
needed for a great cause—a fundraiser
to benefit rescued survivors of human
trafficking and slavery. Hosted
by the Rotary
Club of West Chester Downtown,
the fourth annual Dress for a Good Cause
sells dresses and jewelry for proms,
parties, picnics, and other extravaganzas.
The event allows local girls to buy
prom dresses at rock-bottom prices and
keeps clothing out of landfills. All
proceeds go to projects for survivors
of human trafficking. << more

It
was a fund-raiser to savor and remember…artistic,
inspiring and a remarkable learning experience.
This was the Rotary
Club of Philadelphia’s
unique Evening of Painting at Philadelphia’s
renowned Studio Incamminati on Wednesday,
January 25. The evening featured instruction
from master artists and then an opportunity
for each of the Philadelphia Rotary attendees
and guests to actually paint! But the
best part was that and educational and
fun evening netted $500.00+ for Rotary’s
polio eradication campaign. |

So,
have you heard the great news ?
 |
The government of India on Friday 13 January
announced that the country was free of
endemic polio after a year of no new cases
being reported.
It proves that the efforts of Rotary,
the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation, the WHO, the CDC, etc
are making
headway (and that good things do happen
on Friday
the 13th). However, we cannot rest on
our laurels as there are three countries
that still are reporting cases of the
wild virus so continue to support Polio
efforts.

POLIO
AND LASALLE UNIVERSITY – BOTH WINNERS!
 |
It
was a well-played and exciting game January
4 when LaSalle University men’s
basketball team met Xavier. La Salle prevailed,
80 to 70 with both teams playing talented,
emotional basketball to the very end.It
was also a winning event for Rotary and
District 7450! Rotarians in the district
raised funds for polio by attending the
game. $5 from each ticket was given to
polio, plus additional funds and, more
importantly, consciousness about the status
of polio, was raised. Brian Wirtshafter,
District Treasurer and President of Abington
at Edge Hill Rotary Club, was a great
ambassador for polio as he stood at the
concession tables, asking basketball fans
if they would give a dollar to immunize
a child. Many expressed surprise that
polio is still an issue.
