Ted Merrill
Ted was 7630 District
Governor in Rotary year 2005-2006, but he
served many years before and continued to serve after in many
ways. Ted was Secretary, President Elect and President of
Ocean City/Berlin Rotary Club before joining the Snow Hill
Rotary Club. His District service included Easter Seals, GSE
and Rotary Foundation committees, District Internet Communications
Officer, and Assistant District Governor, as well as the positions
related to being a District Governor. He was on many conference
committees and leadership teams. Ted’s words matched
his actions. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, a Permanent Fund
Benefactor, and charter member of the Bequest Society.
His legacy may well be the
District Website, which was Ted’s baby. We all take
websites for granted – but there is someone behind
those sites who must keep them current and monitored. Ted
was routinely up early and at his computer while many of
us were still in dream land.
|
It was his tireless dedication
to www.rotary7630.org that got our District into the “technology
age.” It was often suggested that Ted get an assistant
to help manage the website, but Ted would have none of that
– he would do it all himself. And so we all benefited
by Ted’s technical savvy and dedication to excellence.
Ted’s tech skills seemed
to come naturally to him. Born in Toledo, Ohio, he was educated
in Ohio, Alabama, Maryland, and Washington D.C., before
graduating from high school in Illinois. He received a B.S.
in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University. Joining
IBM as an Applied Science Systems Representative in 1961,
he served in various engineering, marketing, and programming
management positions until his retirement in 1986.
Ted was principal owner of
TWM enterprises and Tebidine Publishing, faculty member
of WorWic Community College, and a lay leader of Bethany
United Methodist Church. Both he and Sandy were active in
the community, have 8 children and 17 grandchildren. |

John
W. Hentkowski (Died December
21, 2010) Governor of District
7630 from 1990 to 1991
Mr. John W. Hentkowski, age
68, of Elkton, MD, a longtime leader in both the business
and volunteer community, died after a sudden illness on
Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at Christiana Hospital surrounded
by his family.
Born in Wilmington on April
2, 1942, John was a 1960 graduate of Wilmington High School
and founder of Hentkowski, Inc. in January 1968.
|
Now located in Marshallton,
John’s company grew rapidly from its small beginnings
in an old church in Browntown to become a widely respected
HVAC contracting firm. He was well known and admired throughout
his career for his work ethic and commitment to customer
service excellence. John was the recipient of numerous industry
and business honors, including the 2008 Carrier President’s
Award and the Better Business Bureau of Delaware’s
Edward Rush Award for outstanding family-owned small business.
He was also a finalist in the 2009 News Journal Readers’
Choice Awards. Among his professional affiliations, he was
a member of the New Castle County TAC Committee, president
of ServAssure, president of IHCC, and a board member of
the Better Business Bureau.
John’s passion for his
business was equaled only by his lifelong desire to help
those in need. As a 33-year member and past president of
the Rotary Club of Newark, he worked tirelessly for many
years with Rotary’s Polio Plus intiative in its efforts
to eradicate the disease around the world. He was elected
by his fellow Rotarians to serve as the Governor
of District 7630 from 1990 to 1991 and was
a member of the Rotary Foundation Committee from 1991 through
1999. He had also been honored as a Paul Harris Fellow and
Major Donor by the Rotary Foundation.
He worked extensively with
Easter Seals, serving as a member of the Board of the Directors.
He was committed to providing support and guidance at Easter
Seals’ Camp Fairlee Manor in Chestertown, MD, a facility
which allows those with physical, cognitive, and behavioral
disabilities to enjoy camping and summer recreation. In
earlier years, he was active with Boy Scouts of America
and Camp Rodney. John loved animals and, with his wife,
exhibited champion Arabian horses. He was a member and past
chairman of the Eastern Amateur Arabian Horse Show Circuit.
Other interests included the Wilmington & Western Railroad,
where he currently served as treasurer.
He is survived by his beloved
wife, Micki Larson Hentkowski; children, John W. Hentkowski,
Jr. (Kym) of Elkton, MD, Stephen E. Hentkowski of Wilmington,
and Barbara AMH Roberts (Brian) of Avondale; sister, Joan
H. Harris of Wilmington, DE; brother, William S. Hentkowski,
Jr. (Judith) of New Castle, DE; grandchildren, Bryan Hentkowski,
Samantha Bartell, Alexis Hentkowski, Christopher Brody Roberts,
Ian Roberts, and Abigail Roberts. He was preceded in death
by his mother, Anna M. Konkowski Hentkowski, and father,
William Stanley Hentkowski.
In lieu of flowers, contributions
in memory of John may be made to Wilmington & Western
Railroad, P.O. Box 5787, Wilmington, DE 19808; or to The
Rotary Foundation, 14280 Collections Center Dr., Chicago,
IL 60693. Contributions should be marked for “Polio
Plus.”

Mark Rubinstein
was an active member up until the start of this Rotary year
when he reluctantly went to honorary status - he was in hospice
care at that time. And yet, he kindly made donations to both
RI and Gundaker. He was a Rotarian right up to the very end,
supported by his wonderful wife, Judy. Several P-M-B Rotarians
were able to be present at his memorial services. This marks
our third loss of tried and true Rotarians in roughly one
year - Guy Woodworth, Pete Tillett, and Mark Rubinstein. Individuals
such as these fine men will be extremely difficult to replace.
