Magazines
for Hospitals: The
magazine project idea is in full swing. Hospitals have lots
of waiting rooms and very few magazines. We are collecting them
and putting a sticker on the front "Compliments of the
Rotary Club of Northeast Sunrisers Philadelphia, PA" and
on the back with information about our Rotary Club. Carl Mariano
has been collecting them at our meetings.
Why not ask 2 friends to save magazines for you? People who
are waiting for loved ones in surgery, waiting to have a procedure,
waiting to see someone etc., will have something to stay occupied.

Aid
for Friends: This
is a charitable non-profit organization that provides seven
free home-cooked dinners weekly, friendly visiting and supplemental
outreach services to almost 2210 isolated, needy shut-ins, primarily
the frail elderly, in the five-county Greater Philadelphia area.
In conjunction
with Pastor Dave Carey's church we have committed to providing
this worthwhile program with meals. One way you can help to
to do this is by filling the foil dinner trays with home cooked
food, freezing them and bringing them to our meetings on the
first Friday of each month when Pastor Dave will collect them
and take them back to the specially dedicated freezer at his
church. He has more foil trays for you if you are ready for
them.

Urban
Bridges
Mark
Michelman will be coordinating volunteers from our club to be
trained through the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy or
Urban Bridges to be one-on-one tutoring to learners at Urban
Bridges at St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church.
Urban
Bridges offers adult tutoring in basic literacy and GED/pre-GED
programs during several evening programs each week as well as
English as a second language program. The program meets at St.
Gabriel’s Episcopal Church and learners from all races
and religions are welcome.
Mark
reports that he has never worked with more motivated students
and because of their diversity, is not sure who learns more,
him or the learners. He's had students from Afghanistan, Haiti,
the Dominican Republic, South Korea, and
Columbia, just to name a few countries represented in recent
classes”.
Mark
has been tutoring on Wednesdays from 6-8pm for the past year.
If you would like additional information on how you can get
involved volunteering a few hours per month, contact Mark at
215-677-7649 or via email at m.michelman@verizon.net.
St. Gabriel’s is located at 101 East Roosevelt Blvd, just
½ block East of Rising Sun Avenue.

Project Warm:
This
project was a huge success. We collect coats, sweaters, scarves,
hats and gloves for families of need in the Philadelphia area
distributed them through social service agencies which work
with individuals and families in transition such as: new immigrants
to the US; orphans; women at battered women's shelters and a
halfway house.
This
project was capped off by a wonderful working dinner party hosted
by Gary Winkler where all the collected items were sorted and
packed for distribution.
Thanks
to Jeanes Hospital, NEHS, Marriot Hotel, Citizen's Bank and
State Farm Insurance Company for serving as collection points
for these items.

The Widener Holiday Party:
Usually held the week before Winter Break
Together
with Jenkintown Rotary and the Interact Clubs from Jenkintown
and Central HS, we host a holiday party for the children at
Widener Memorial School. This is a school for children with
physical disabilities. The party is held just before the beginning
of winter break. There are snacks, songs, and fellowship with
the children capped off with a special visit by Santa to deliver
gifts for each child in the program. The Widener School Choir
performs using the amplification system donated by our club.
Our
donations go for individual gifts for these most needy of children.
The Interact Club of Jenkintown has been shopping for the presents.
In addition a donation is usually made to the Home and School
Association for use to supply their needy children with gloves,
hats and scarves or to provide the school with needed equipment..
