Summer 2009

The Central Delaware County Rotary Club is very active.

John Maioriello, attorney, recently spoke at a Central Delaware County Rotary Club breakfast meeting in June. Mr. Maioriello informed the club about the need for wills, powers of attorney, and healthcare powers of attorney. He spoke about the liability for executors and executor fees. He also informed the Club about how to execute a change in a will properly. Mr. Maioriello grew up in Delaware County and now has an office in Philadelphia.

Joveline Pettus and Jody LaVerdure, two members of the Rotary 2009 Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team to the Philippines also spoke to the Central Delaware County Rotary Club in June. They spoke about the large number of Rotarians in the Philippines, and the positive impact that these clubs are making. One of their projects is Stepping Stone, a live-in program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Rural areas in the Philippines are in need of clean water, and the Rotary Clubs provide clean water for the public schools. Children get to take home clean water as well. The poverty level in the Philippines was heart breaking, with one village located in a trash dump site. Rotarians helped open a school for this village and they provided clean water for students. In contract, the Island of Palawan was beautiful and is the location of an underground river, which is being considered one of the new wonders of the world.

The Central Delaware County Rotary welcomes guests and meets very Wednesday morning at 7:15 a.m. at the Coffee Club on State Street in Media. Please call Jeanne at 610-306-6901 if you would like more information on the Club.

During this holiday season, the Central Delaware County Rotary Club donated coats purchased from Operation Warm to the Community Action Agency of Delaware County (CAADC) and turkeys to the St. James Alumni Association. Skilled professionals at CAADC assess client problems and develop a case management plan which will assist the client in reaching the goal of self-sufficiency through such programs as workforce development, child care, after-school program and housing assistance. The St. James Alumni Association distribute meals to City Team Ministries in Chester. The Central DELCO Rotary Club raises funds throughout the year and donates those funds to local non-profits, and to Rotary International programs. The Central DELCO Rotary meets weekly on Wednesday mornings at the Coffee Club on State Street in Media at 7:15-8:15. Visitors are always welcome. If you would like further information about the Rotary Club International, please visit their website at www.rotary7450.org.
Judy Martelli, a native of Delaware County and graduate of Immaculata College, spoke to the Rotary Club of Central Delaware County about her experience playing women’s basketball at Immaculata. Ms. Martelli was on the Mighty Macs basketball team, under Coach Cathy Rush, when they won three consecutive National Women’s Collegiate Championships in 1972, 1973 and 1974. Ms. Martelli told the Rotary members about the tremendous support of the nuns at Immaculata. One example of that support was when the nuns sent the basketball team to the Championship playoff game. They only had enough money to send the team one way and told the team not to worry, they would get the money for their return trip somehow.
Judy and her team’s experience winning their first championship is captured in a film by Tim Chambers currently titled Our Lady of Victory. The film stars Ellen Bursten, Carla Gugino and David Boreanaz. Judy Martelli was one of seven of the original eleven teammates who will make a cameo appearance in the movie as nuns.
Judy is married to Phil Martelli, St. Joseph’s basketball coach, and has 3 grown children. Her two sons are college assistant basketball coaches and her daughter is a college student.
