What
is Rotary?
Rotary is a worldwide organization
of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian
service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations,
and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately
1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 32,000 clubs in more
than 200 countries and geographical areas. (see what we are
doing by visiting the links in our website Website
Links) - See pictures from this years Rotary International
Convention held in Salt Lake City in June 2007 where 147 countries
were represented by over 16,000 Rotarians. It was quite a site
and a very motivational week as we met old friends, made new
friends, learned about projects from around the world and so
on.(SLC Convention 2007)
Object
of Rotary
The Object of Rotary
is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of
worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST.
The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND.
High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition
of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying
of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD.
The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal,
business, and community life;
FOURTH.
The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and
peace through a world fellowship of business and professional
persons united in the ideal of service.
Rotary
Membership
Members of a Rotary
club are part of a diverse group of professional leaders working
to address various community and international service needs
and to promote peace and understanding throughout the world.
After
our club assembly and taking care of various club business,
Club members - Bill Smith, Richard Bourbon, and Brian Wirtshafter,
along with Juliet Ingram, spouse of club member Michael Ingram,
and former caterer and friend of Edge Hill, Sam Rizzo, headed
to the Emlen School in Mt Airy (Philadelphia) to give out dictionaries
to all the third graders of the School. Our club has been going
to Emlen for many years and reading to the Head Start Students
as well as giving one on one support to some of the other grades
in their reading programs. This is the second year of the dictionary
projects. This year each dictionary was personalized with the
students name on a label with the four way test of Rotary and
were given out in smaller classrooms where each student was
personally called up to receive their dictionary. After giving
out the dictionaries, the students were then challenged to a
reading program and if accomplished, promised a pizza party
in the spring. Let's try for 100% participation.

Students at the Emlen School
Thanks to the Adminstration and Teachers of the Emlen
School and to the Edge Hill Rotary Family (Club Members,
Friends and Family) for making our second year of our
Dictionary Literacy Program a success. We will move
on to our reading challenge to these students, and weekly
reading to the Head Start Students. Future plans to
help with their library are in the works!!!
Club member Brian reads and explains
the meaning of the Four Way Test to each of the classes
and how it has impact on everyones life to make the world
a better place to live.
Each
Student was called up individually to get their own dictionary
with their name inside.
Feel the love!!! Making an impact
in the community and the world is what Rotary is all about!
Students show their appreciation for their new dictionaries
that they can use as they read to meet the challenge that
we presented them.
Brian
Wirtshafter had the opportunity to go for gold and pull the
joker. Too bad Brian but the 8 of spades does not bring home
the bacon. The chances are getting better for next weeks winner
of the 50/50 as the jackpot continues to grow once more and
the number of cards left in the deck gets smaller.

It’s tough to say which member of the deFuria family is
the most active in Rotary. Russell, of the Rotary Club of Upper
Darby-Lansdowne, was the first to join, in 1985, and is now
governor of District 7450. His wife’s involvement belies
her shorter tenure: Dawn joined the Rotary Club of Greater West

The first round of training began
on December 7, 2007 for District Governor Elect Joel Chesney's
Leadership Team at the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce.
Many of next years committee chairs and interested parties came
out to hear PDG and Trainer Arnie Graff and his training team
talk about the attendees roles and other Rotary information
important to know in their upcoming positions.
GOVERNOR NOTES – December
2007
It doesn’t seem possible that it’s already December
and half of our year together to show that “Rotary Shares”
is already gone. But we still have six more months to achieve
the goals of the clubs in our district. My pledge to you is
that I, along with our Assistant Governors and all of our District
committees, will continue to provide the best support possible
to help our clubs have the best year ever until we turn things
over to DGE Joel and his team for next year.
Speaking of DGE Joel Chesney, the “circle of life….Rotary
style” has begun as of this past weekend. This was the
first training opportunity for DGE Joel and his training team
to meet with many leaders from across our district to begin
planning for our next Rotary year. Before we know it, it will
be time for Governor’s training in San Diego and for the
training of next year’s class of Presidents at their own
PETS.
But, in the meantime there is still much to do and much to be
accomplished this Rotary year. January 26th will be our first
ever Project Fair Mid-Year Assembly at the Chester County Intermediate
Unit, 335 Manor Ave., Downingtown (south of the Rt.322 Exit
of Rte 30). It will run from 10-3, with presentations through
the day, and you can come and go as needed. This should be a
fantastic chance for clubs to share their great work and get
some terrific new ideas.
February will start off with another first time ever event in
our district. On Saturday the 9th, there will be a “Rotaract
Leadership Institute”. RLI has been a wonderful way to
train and develop Rotary leaders, so now we are providing the
same opportunity to our Rotaractors. Under the leadership of
District Chair Jane Williams of the Ardmore club, Rotaract has
been thriving in our district. There has been much success of
late with the concept of community based clubs, as opposed to
being based at a local college or university. These emerging
leaders are anxious to be an important part of the Rotary family.
February 22-24 will be our annual RYLA event. Rotary Youth Leadership
Awards is a great chance for us to recognize high school age
leaders and to help them develop their own talents. The event
will be held at the Freedom Foundation in Valley Forge. Chair
Maria Mills-Torres of the Madrugadores club has developed an
outstanding and very creative program for this year. But, the
real success depends on you and your clubs providing young people
that will take full advantage of what is provided. We hope that
each club in our district will invest in the future by sending
as many students as possible, once again adding members to the
Rotary family.
In just over four months, we will be together for our first
ever “Multi-District Conference”. Mark your calendars
now for the weekend of April 25-27 and join us at Skytop Lodge,
as we celebrate our many accomplishments and enjoy the fellowship
of D-7430 and D-7450. This promises to be a unique event with
outstanding opportunities for Rotary networking, education,
and most of all, a lot of fun for the entire family. Did I mention
the golf course or the spa on premises? You’ll be hearing
lots more in the next couple of months. District Chair Tony
Dileva of the Glen Mills club and his team have put a lot of
work into making this something special.
For now, I hope that all of you will remember all of the members
of our Family of Rotary during this month. Early Act, Interact,
Rotaract, RYLA, and Youth Exchange are all part of the family.
But, so are GSE members, Ambassadorial Scholars, all of our
alumni, spouses of deceased members, and our own spouses and
families. If we are to truly act as a family, we need to be
there for and support the other members. I hope that all of
you will have a most joyous holiday season. Thanks for all you
do to show that “Rotary Shares”!
Dictionaries
have been received and we will be setting up our distribution
of the books to each of the new third grade class at Emlen shortly
and making the challenge to these students to read and be a
part of a pizza party at the end of the school year sponsored
by our Rotary Club. This year we will be inserting a personalized
decal with each of the students names in the inside cover. In
addition, contact has been made to obtain childrens books to
help build the schools library!

Group
Study Exchange
The Group
Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique
cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young adults.
Through the program, teams of professional men and women exchange
visits between paired areas in different countries. The awards
involve four-week visits, during which team members share homes
with Rotary families, experience the host country's institutions
and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad,
develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange
ideas with their professional counterparts. They also give presentations
to Rotary clubs and other groups about their sponsor district
and home country.
2007-08 GSE Exchange with Italy
This Rotary year, our district is exchanging teams with District
2100 in Naples, Italy. The District includes Campania, Calabria,

for 2007-2008.
The outbound team from District 7450 will travel to Italy

The inbound
team will be in our district from - April 5 – May 4, 2008
and will travel back home with our outbound team
