Rotary Suports Hope Children’s Home
Rebecca started
her presentation with a few facts about the country of Guyana
in South America. Guyana is the only English speaking Country
in South America. The country is the size of the state Rhode
Island and 80% of it is rainforest; with most people living
near the coast. Guyana is 20 feet below sea level, the Dutch
built a seawall to alleviate any flooding. Rebecca had been
involved with the St. John Bosco Orphanage for Boys school
prior to the Hope Children’s Home. She started Hope
Children’s Home six years ago and travels there once
a year with a stay of a month. There are 46 children at
Hope Children’s Home; it started with the idea of
having only 20 children. The orphanage is filled with both
healthy children and those who are disabled or suffering
from such diseases as HIV, cerebral palsy, etc. At the orphanage
Rebecca is mostly involved with administration, though she
has done some teaching when needed. There is much to do
such as coordinating the lunches for the children so that
everyone gets to eat. The eating area is small and the children
eat in groups. The correct nutrition is also important so
menus must be prepared. Maintenance of the property including
kitchen area, sleeping areas, school rooms, etc. They have
recently put in new flooring and cabinets in the kitchen
as well as a new table for the food preparation and tables
for the children to have their meals. Rebecca was also able
to start a library for the children. Rebecca had so many
heart warming stories to share with us. One was of a boy
who is enjoying reading the encyclopedia; he worked his
way through “A” and is now on to “B”!
The Children’s Home has many needs; currently clothes
for teen girls are in need. |
