  • John Palmer announced that our Rotaract Club has 8 members & is set to start on January 29.
  • Saturday, January 26, is the date for the District’s "Rotary Shares” (site: Downingtown Intermediate Unit on Boot Rd.), at which all clubs will exhibit their activities. DG Russ will give us details next week during his official visit.
  • Dave Hennessy will be inducted into our Hall of Fame next week, & Doug McDougall will be welcomed into the club as our newest member.
  • We were sad to hear of the passing of Harry Fell, a good friend & past president of our club. Harry was 98.
  • In his Rotary Foundation Minute, Dave Brossart announced that Dave & Charlene Hennessy will say a few words next week about why they are Paul Harris Fellows, & that we’ll have a couple of ambassadorial scholars visit us & give talks in the next few months.
  • From Robert Frost: "The brain is a wonderful organ. It starts working the moment you get up in the morning & does not stop until you get into the office.”

            PROGRAM

Dennis Wolf conducted our Students of the Month program:

  • Jarred Thomas (Penn Wood), among the top 10 students in his class, is a gifted writer & musician. He works in the community, spending many hours cleaning up the neighborhood & helping residents who need help. He wants to be a writer, director, & producer of movies.
  • Kara Butler (Penn Wood), is also among the top 10 students in her class, despite a learning disability in spelling & reading. She is a member of both the National Honor Society & the National Art Honor Society--her specialty is ceramics. She works in the community helping the fire company, & she tutors other students in math. She wants to pursue a career in business.
  • Sierra Park (UDHS) is in the top 2% of her class & is very active in community & school projects. She is a Spanish tutor, helps Hillcrest's health & fitness newspaper, works with the Salvation Army, & is involved in helping 3rd World schools. She is on the field hockey team & school newspaper. Sierra will attend Penn in political science, hoping to become a lawyer.
  • Joseph Niagara (UDHS) is in the concert choir & is 2nd team All Delco in lacrosse. He helps to coach the Drexel Hill Raiders lacrosse team. His football career was cut short by a dislocated knee. He has been inspired by his teachers & wants to become a teacher himself. He reads to students at Aronimink Elementary School & helps freshmen at UDHS get acclimated to the school. He has been accepted to Swarthmore College.
  • Robert Clark (Bonner/Prendergast) ranks 5th in his class; he’s a Diocesan Scholar (he takes 2 courses at Villanova) who wants to follow in his grandfather's footsteps to become a mechanical engineer. (As a child, Robert loved taking things apart & putting them back together.) He has worked with the UD fire department to install smoke detectors in homes. He is very close to becoming an Eagle Scout.
  • Bridget Boston (Prendergast/Bonner) is ranked 5th in her class & is also a Diocesan Scholar (she takes 2 courses at Cabrini). She serves both community & parish as president of St. Laurence's CYO as a volunteer for the food bank. Bridget believes service brings people together for a common cause. She is on the varsity volleyball team & is editor of the yearbook. She wants to major in poly sci & enter law &/or government.

When you hear these students speak, you realize that the future is bright in this country. John Shillingford, Bonner & Prendergast's counselor, tells his students that God gave them gifts, but it is up to them to use their gifts to make this world a better place.                                          --Jack Schulman
